“Diabetes Case Studies” 2hrs. COPE # 91494-SD

This session will consider the epidemics of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy via a series of illustrative patient case examples. Accepted and novel strategies for prevention and treatment of both will be discussed.

12pm-2pm: Christopher Borgman, OD

12:00pm-1:40pm: “Retina Brainteaser Cases” 2hrs COPE # 91648-TD

This course will review and discuss the pathology behind approximately a dozen retinal pathology cases that are not seen in optometry every day. An approach to review and use our knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and pathology will be reviewed to best manage these types of patients that may not present every day. New and old thoughts in the management and treatment of retinal pathology cases will also be reviewed. Additionally, pitfalls in the diagnosis of these conditions will be discussed in an attempt to prevent the attendees from making the potential mistakes that the lecturer did in some aspects of these cases.

2:00pm-3:40pm: “Central Scotomas: Common Differentials”  2hrs. COPE # 91649-TD

Optometrists are often the first clinician to evaluate and diagnose central and cecocentral scotomas in patients. Central scotomas have a fairly broad number of causes and can include typical and atypical causes. These causes can include: glaucoma, acquired macula lesions, hereditary maculopathies, hereditary optic neuropathies, and neurological lesions. This lecture is intended to logically walk through the steps of differential diagnoses when encountering patients with central and cecocentral scotomas in a clinical setting.
