Many conditions should be “owned” by optometrists (because these are almost always nonsurgical
conditions). Three common ones include glaucoma, dry eye disease and hydroxychloroquine (such
as Plaquenil from Sanofi-Aventis) retinal toxicity. Spending quality face-to-face time with patients is
vitally important to ensure excellence of care. Doctors who see around 25 patients a day should be
much better positioned to provide excellent care than a doctor who sees twice that many patients
per day; it just makes sense.
