DEA REQUIRED 8HR. OPIOID TRAINING/SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDERS LIVE WEBINAR

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released information in early 2023 related to the new Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act. The Act requires new or renewing DEA licensees to have completed a total of at least eight hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders and the appropriate treatment of pain. Beginning on June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered and new practitioners are required to attest to completion of the training when renewing or completing an initial registration.

 “Treatment of Pain: Opioid Choices and Issues for Patient and Practitioner” 2hrs.  COPE #89865 -PH

Course Description: This is an oral pharmacology course that describes the appropriate use of opioid medications, with an emphasis on pain management within the scope of Optometry and general pain management. Case anecdotes will include management of ocular pain, with specific emphasis on oral/systemic medications. Opioid medications will be evaluated in terms of risk versus benefit, with an emphasis on appropriate use of pain medications, evaluation of potential addiction, and a description on how to protect both patient and practitioner.

11am-12:40pm: BRUCE ONFREY, OD” Management of Ocular Pain in the Era of the Opiate/Fentanyl”  2hrs.  COPE # 88814-PH   Epidemic Management of pain with controlled substances has become more challenging within the context of the devasting effect on society of the opiate/fentanyl epidemic. This lecture will cover strategies to avoid diversion of these drugs as well as alternatives to their use. Case management examples are used to illustrate proper drug selection and use.

2pm-3:40pm: BLAIR LONSBERRY, OD “Pain Management in Optometric Practice in an Era of Opioid Abuse” 2hrs.COPE # 89812-PH Ocular pain is an important reason why patients seek care, especially on an emergent basis. The following interactive presentation will use a case based approach to explore the most effective means to manage pain in optometric practice including the importance of understanding addiction and the current opioid abuse epidemic. Topical and oral pain management will be discussed with particular emphasis on the appropriate steps in prescribing oral pain medications.

4:00pm-5:40pm: STEVE SORKIN, OD” Prescribing Dangerous and Controlled Substances in Eye Care” 2hrs. COPE # 88815-PH

This course will review the contemporary state of the opioid epidemic in the United States and its effect on society in general. Specific impacts on optometric practice will be discussed. The roles of topical and oral pain management in eye care will be reviewed and new approaches to the management of ocular pain will be highlighted during this course. Public health ramifications of addiction and proposed government intervention/ possible remedies will also be covered.
